Honest Guidance
There Is No Single Right Answer
Repair makes sense for most newer systems with isolated problems. Replacement makes sense when an aging system has multiple issues, has lost efficiency, or is approaching the end of its useful life. The honest answer depends on your specific system, your repair history, and your long-term goals — not on a generic rule.
What Actually Matters
Six Factors That Decide the Answer
Weigh these factors together. No single one decides — the full picture does.
Age of the System
Industry guidance suggests most central AC systems in Florida last around 12 to 15 years. Some last longer with strong maintenance. Use age as one signal, not a deadline.
Repair Frequency
A single repair on a healthy system is normal maintenance. Multiple repairs in the same season — or the same component failing repeatedly — is usually a signal that more failures are coming.
Cost vs. Replacement Value
A common industry guideline: when a single repair approaches roughly half the cost of a new system, replacement may be worth comparing. Treat it as a starting point, not a fixed rule.
Energy Efficiency
Older systems run at lower SEER ratings and lose efficiency over time. A modern Carrier-installed system can meaningfully reduce monthly cooling costs through Florida's long summer.
Comfort and Air Quality
Hot spots, humidity issues, and uneven cooling can come from system decline, undersizing, or ductwork problems. Some are fixable through repair or duct work — others may indicate the system is no longer matched to your home.
Refrigerant Type
Systems still running on R-22 refrigerant (production phased out in 2020) often face higher repair costs because R-22 has become expensive and harder to source. This is one factor to weigh, not an automatic replacement signal.
