March 18, 2025Emergency AC Repair in Jacksonville: What You Need to Know
April 21, 2025Planning HVAC Upgrades After Federal Energy Credits Ended
Before deciding on a home energy upgrade, separate the project price from any incentive you expect to receive. This article was updated on October 5, 2026 because earlier wording incorrectly described federal residential energy credits as open-ended.
Use the current IRS deadlines
The IRS Form 5695 instructions state that the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025. The Residential Clean Energy Credit also ended for new expenditures after that date. A new 2026 HVAC installation should not be quoted on the assumption that these credits remain available.
For earlier work, review the current IRS Form 5695 instructions with your tax preparer. Eligibility depends on the program, equipment, dates, and your circumstances.
Compare the full cost of an upgrade
- Equipment and installation: Request a written scope showing the proposed system and included work.
- Operating costs: Ask how efficiency, sizing, ductwork, and use affect the estimate of future energy consumption.
- Repairs and maintenance: Review the condition and repair history of your current system before deciding to replace it.
- Current offers: Confirm any rebate, financing terms, or coupon directly. Evaluate each separately from federal tax credits.
Prepare for an estimate
Gather your equipment model, installation date, service records, and recent energy bills. Describe rooms that stay warm, airflow concerns, noise, or recurring repair problems.
