Air Conditioner Filters | Differences Between Permanent Vs. Disposable Filter
January 31, 2019
If one of your goals this year is to upgrade your HVAC system, you may be wondering where to start. Choosing a new system is a big decision that can affect finances for years to come, so making the right choice is important. Let’s take a look at some of the most important things to consider when deciding on the right upgrade.
The Type and Cost of Fuel You Will Use
Common fuel options include natural gas, LP, wood pellets, and even electricity. Take a look at fuel rates and access to fuel in your area to find out what prices will be. Switching from electricity or oil to something like natural gas is a great way to save money and improve efficiency, but you should know how much it costs first.
How Efficient Your System Can Be
HVAC systems are marked with all sorts of energy efficiency ratings to help consumers understand how well they perform, and how effectively they use energy. Compare these numbers to see exactly what efficiency boost that your upgrade will yield. A significantly better rating, say moving from a SEER rating of 12 to 15, will help you recoup the purchase costs much more quickly – and save money afterward.
What Sort of Air Quality You Are Interested In
Do you have trouble with the air quality in your house? Do some family members struggle with allergens, or are you tired of dealing with dust and debris buildup, especially during winter? Or maybe smells in your home seem to linger longer than necessary. If you have these issues, look into an upgrade that includes an air purifier or extra filtration built into your system.
Space and Components
Make sure of two things. First, that your old HVAC space has enough room for the new unit you choose – otherwise, you may have to pick a different location. Second, make sure that your old wiring, ductwork, pipes and other components are compatible with your new model. If not, make sure you get an estimate for how much it would cost to update additional parts of your HVAC system as needed.
Eco-Friendly Options
Is one of your goals to go more eco-friendly? Look into switching to a heat pump if you don’t already have one. Heat pumps don’t consume fuel. They can heat and cool a house using very little energy compared to other options. You may also want to consider combining your HVAC system with a solar power.
